Welcome to our Allied Health Assistant Program

What are Allied Health Assistants?

Allied health assistants work under the direct supervision of allied health professionals. Our allied health assistants support our clients by implementing a therapy program prescribed by a Speech Pathologist or Occupational Therapist.

An allied health assistant either has a certificate level qualification in allied health assistance or is training at university to become an allied health professional. This means they have good background knowledge and basic skills to help them deliver specific prompting, strategies, and overall supports.

What does working with our Allied Health Assistant Program look like?

Little Steps Therapies has been running an Allied Health Assistant Program since 2020. When participating in our Allied Health Assistant Program you can expect to follow a clear process:

1. Assessment: When you come into the clinic, the first session will be with a fully qualified OT and/or Speech Pathologist. They will complete an assessment and discuss goals for therapy intervention with you. They will also complete a report for you after the assessment.

2. Planning: The OT or Speech Pathologist will then sit down with the AHA and develop a plan for how to approach these goals and what sessions will entail.

3. Intervention: The AHA will then use this plan to deliver the planned intervention. The AHA and supervising OT and/or Speech Pathologist will work collaboratively and will be in regular contact to ensure therapy is running smoothly and effectively.

What are the benefits of participating in our Allied Health Assistant Program?

Allied Health Assistants:

  • Are at a lower cost than a fully qualified therapist. This means they are a great resource for families on a tight budget.
  • Can be a great way of getting additional sessions in per week for families requiring more frequent and intensive therapy support.
  • Are student OTs and Speech Pathologists in training, so they are great for supporting your child with their goals.
  • Can help your child work on both Speech Pathology and OT goals, if required.
  • May be able to see you while you are placed on a waitlist for OT and/or Speech therapy. You can see an AHA in the interim to ensure that you are supported while you wait and are not missing out on valuable learning time.
