What Skills Do Occupational Therapists Work On?

Being Independent

  • Toileting
  • Dressing (doing buttons, tying shoelaces, putting on socks)
  • Eating (using cutlery, cutting own food, increasing variety of foods)
  • Grooming (brushing teeth, brushing hair)

Building friendships

  • Developing type of play (functional play, imaginary play, play with others)
  • Sharing and turn taking 
  • Initiating play and responding to friends 
  • Solving problems 
  • Following social rules 
  • Identifying and responding to other’s emotions 

Preparing for and succeeding at school

  • Following routine 
  • Cognitive skills (attention, planning, organisation)
  • Developing interest in learning and social activities 
  • Development of fine motor skills (learning to hold a pencil, opening bags, colouring, cutting)
  • Development of gross motor skills (catching a ball, running, jumping)

Regulation

  • Co-regulation (regulating a child alongside of them)
  • Identifying, labelling and coping with emotions
  • Coping with sensitivities to sensory information (noise, touch, taste, vision)
  • Coping with overstimulation (being in busy environments like the playground, classroom, shopping centres)

When should I see an Occupational Therapist?

  • If your child is missing developmental milestones 
  • If preschool, day care or school have identified any concerns 
  • If you have any concern or question
